Blue Songs is Bloody Good

31 Jan

I Love Hercules and Love affair. I’ve seen them twice live now (once at Fabric and once at Love Box) and both times has been AMAZING. Even though i’m not sure who’s a permanent member and who’s a man or a woman the music they create is soooo good. The best was to describe it would be gay modern 80′s dance.

With a hint of piano jazz you can ease into Blue Songs, their latest masterpiece of an album. Their music sounds so foreign, there’s nothing out in the popular music industry like them. I honestly feel like a gay transvestite when i listen to it. It’s soothing yet powerful and sassy. Even though a lot of their lyrics are repeated, it adds to the mystical effect. There are too many words to describe this music. Like all albums there’s a song that’s not quite up to standards (“Boy Blue” which is a bit too sombre for me) but aside from this it’s golden and beautiful.

Going to see them again in March at Digital (YAY), maybe then i’llanswer all my member questions. But I DEFINITELY know i’ll be dancing like nobodies business.

neglected, sick, sick, sick.

12 Nov

So i’ve seriously forgot about this since summer… got myself a job… but I still have oodles of time so I don’t know what the heck i’ve been up to.

Today is a serious Queens of the Stone Age day. Can’t get enough of Josh Homme’s dulcet cba yet sexy voice and the sweet ass guitar.

On another note, whilst sifting my way through spotify I found a horrible discovery. My first reaction was to vom, but I was overcome by curiosity and took a sneaky listen. I have heard THE WORST TRACK EVER being ruined even more, as if Ellie Jackson’s voice wasn’t bad enough over that simple and dire keyboard… Kanye West comes along and does his bit half way through… why? who knows/cares. He’s just wasted his time again on another pointless act.

As if Kanye’s new track wasn’t retarded enough. You’re the douche bag. Idiot.

Andy Burrows, Why’d you waste all that time in Razorlight?

22 Aug

As good as Razorlight are… Andy Burrows was wasting his talent in that band. This is sooooo obvious from I Am Arrows music. He plays all the instruments in his recorded songs (obviously he can’t do it all himself live). Andy has one of those voices which surprises you, from barely hearing it in Razorlights stuff I can hardly believe he has such a melodic and beautiful voice. His songs utter pure genious and beauty. It seeps a sweet summery guitar vibe, with a long hippy haircut to match. You can tell that Andy is enjoying this far more than the cage that was Razorlight. Green Grass is by far the best song i’ve heard this year. It’s not soo acoustic that it could rival Mumford, there’s a little synth in there too to mix it up and make it.

Take that Mr Borrell, this is by far one of the best solo projects ever.

Monarchy, not the heavy metal band, the good one

29 Jul
Not to be confused with the Canadian heavy metal band – they couldn’t sound less like them. Their sound and image has lead their launch, forget information overload on monarchy, there’s just a few reviews here and there. Enter the mysterious Monarchy. I hate comparing bands, each are different in many ways. But for arguments sake, Monarchy are the next dapper Delphic (with less over instrument use), with a hint of Golden Filter (minus the chick). Monarchy are a duo from London (but are from Canada originally), their identities remain a mystery (like Bloody Beetroots or Daft Punk). The Phoenix Alive you may have already heard if you’re a fan of Kitsune compilation albums. It exhales charm and beauty throughout the song. The singing is soothing yet the beat is energetic. It’s like they’ve revolutionised keyboard to be less of a 70’s music concept and far more modern. You can’t disagree that Monarchy are new and exciting that could suit the masses. You could dance, sing or just calmly listen to their melodic and entrancing songs.  Love Get Out of My Way is by far their best track so far. It’s a little more suave and sophisticated with what I can only describe as “high swoopy sounds.” This song’s like a drug, you will get addicted. No need for rehab, this is by far the best addiction you’ll ever have.

Old Music’s Always Best

21 Jun

Recently got spotify (don’t hate me music industry) to expand my old music collection. I’ve stumbled across a load of really good bands and fallen in love with them all over again.

The Cure… New Order… The Smiths…

And not to mention Human League who’re playing Guilfest this year. I’m not really a fan of old bands reforming (apart from Blondie of course) but I am exceptionally anticipating this return, even if no new material’s released.

I love how they sounds like a more chilled version of Art Brut Vs Take That. Especially on Empire State Human. The synth… the electronic drums… it’s all there! But also their brilliant fashion sense and A-symmetric haircuts… which I think have gone but will always be remembered.

I love the music from the 80s… definitely born in the wrong era. It’s all so magical and happy… even when it’s not meant to be (Don’t You Want Me Baby etc).

Stopmakingme Dance

10 Jun

Since I turned eighteen I have been to my fair share of gigs… but the transition to being that age has brought me a whole new world of AMAZING gigs. I pitty the pre-18 year old me I once was for missing out on such brilliantly energetic gigs.

Goodbye Underage, Hello dance gigs.

Bugged Out!… Together… They’ve all been bloody good nights. Times to find new DJs (Stopmakingme, Eskimo Twins, People Get Real etc). And jiggle to some of the old favourites (Erol Alkan, Filthy Dukes, The Bloody Beetroots). And times to get video-ed kissing your boyfriend… but that’s another story.

After hearing Filthy Dukes Nonsense In The Dark I HAD to get my hands on some tickets to see them. I love how their album tracks are so much louder on my generic music playing device that it surprisingly blasts my ear drums with their ecstasy filled tracks.

I’s subscribed to a few podcasts on itunes (The best one being the Russell Howard and John Richardson one… but that’s for another post). Erol Alkan’s is good. Oozing live excellence. But the one i can’t stop listening to right now is Stopmakingme’s.

It leaves me buzzing. I could listen to it over again. Its more subtle than the likes of Bloody Beetroots or Erol Alkan; you couldn’t lose yourself in a drug-like high. But you could still have a jolly good dance. Check out Stopmakingme – Live mix for No Pain In Pop August 08 on itunes… now.

Oh the joys of being 18

Rabbi Darwin, How I Love Thou.

9 Jun

On first look of Darwin I thought… he’s a try hard indie kid. Classic kooky clothes and an interesting haircut and mismatched mustache.

But I gave it a go anyway, because that’s what you do when curiosity engulfs you. Turns out one of the only songs he had available at the time was Constellations. So i double clicked to preview. Immediately my apathetic mood lifted. Darwin Deez is a musician like no other. His music is delightfully twangy yet relaxed. Listening to his album feels like frolicking through a field on a sunny day. And seeing as he’s a follower of the teachings of 20th century Indian spiritualist Meher Baba… it sort of explains why.

I can’t really compare his singing voice to anyone else. It kind of sounds like your classic annoying tangy american artist’s voice… but Darwin’s voice is far from annoying. It’s not beautiful… but it’s fun. I could listen to his self titled debut album OVER AND OVER. If I were a doctor, I would definitely prescribe it for depression. I can feel the endorphins and dopamine and all that jazz floating through my system. I’m in a happy place. There’s no wincing

Usually you can flick through music magazines and see the same try hard dull indie bands again and again that have no hope. But Darwin really is another case. Having already toured on NME’s latest radar tour he has already kicked off his band in England. Next stop, world domination… one euphoric song at a time.
